Cold Pressed Virgin Coconut Oil — From Fresh Coconut, Not Copra

Virgin coconut oil, separated from the milk of fresh mature coconuts rather than pressed from dried copra. The kernel never sees the sun or a kiln, so the oil is paler, milder and keeps more of its natural antioxidants. This is the grade people buy for babies, for skin and for uncooked use.

How we make it

Fresh mature kernel is grated and pressed for milk the same day it is opened. The milk is left to separate and the oil drawn off cold — no external heat, no drying step, no solvent. Because nothing is dried, there is no smoky or musty note; virgin oil smells faintly of fresh coconut rather than strongly of copra. Yield is much lower than copra pressing, which is why it costs more.

What goes in, what stays out

One ingredient: fresh coconut. No copra oil blended in, no bleaching, no deodorising, no fragrance. Nothing is added to whiten it — virgin coconut oil is naturally water-clear when liquid and bright white when set.

How to use it

  • Baby massage and infant skin care
  • Hair and scalp application
  • Raw finishing — drizzled over salads, porridge or smoothies where the mild aroma suits
  • Light sautéing and tempering
  • Oil pulling

How to store it

Room temperature, capped, out of sunlight. It sets below about 24°C, which is normal. Keep it dry — never return used oil or a wet spoon to the bottle.

Frequently asked questions

What makes an oil virgin rather than just cold pressed?

Virgin means it came from fresh coconut kernel, not dried copra, and was never refined. Cold pressed describes the temperature of extraction. An oil can be cold pressed from copra and still not be virgin, which is the distinction most labels blur.

Is virgin coconut oil safe for babies?

It is the grade most commonly chosen for infant massage because it is unrefined, single-ingredient and has no added fragrance. As with anything new on a baby's skin, try a small patch first.

Why is virgin coconut oil more expensive than ordinary coconut oil?

Yield. Copra pressing extracts oil from kernel that has already lost most of its water. Virgin extraction works with fresh kernel and recovers less oil per coconut, so more coconuts go into the same bottle.

Does virgin coconut oil taste of coconut?

Less than copra oil, not more. People expect the opposite. Copra drying concentrates the strong nutty aroma; virgin oil is comparatively delicate, which is why it suits raw use and baby care.

Can I cook with it, or is it only for skin and hair?

You can cook with it. It handles tempering and light sautéing well. For everyday Kerala cooking most households prefer the stronger copra-pressed oil, and keep virgin oil for raw and topical use.

Why does Cold Pressed Virgin Coconut Oil foam when it is heated?

Because there is no anti-foaming agent in it. Refined oils have silicone-based additives that stop this; unrefined oil does not, so it froths, particularly in humid weather. It is a sign of what is absent. If it bothers you, drop a small ball of tamarind into the hot oil for a minute and the foam settles.

Does Cold Pressed Virgin Coconut Oil contain trans fats or cholesterol?

No hydrogenation is used, so there is no industrially produced trans fat, and no plant oil contains cholesterol. Those two things are true of any genuinely unrefined, mechanically pressed oil, ours included.

Is Cold Pressed Virgin Coconut Oil filtered, and why is it sometimes cloudy?

It is filtered through cloth only, never through bleaching clay. That leaves fine particles of the seed or kernel behind, so the oil can look cloudy and drop a little sediment. Perfectly clear oil has usually been through a refining step.

What makes Cold Pressed Virgin Coconut Oil from Miller Stores different?

It is pressed in small batches in the shop rather than refined in a plant and shipped in drums. Nothing is bleached, deodorised or blended in, and there is no synthetic antioxidant to stretch the shelf life - so it is fresher, it smells of what it came from, and it is meant to be used rather than stored.
